However, there are some problems with cotton that fiber artists must deal with. Cotton yarn actually gets stronger when it is wet. Liquid absorption is the reason why many people make dish- and washcloths out of cotton yarns. Quilters love cotton because of its versatility and capacity to be painted. Cotton absorbs liquid well, so it easily accepts coloring and prints, while remaining stable and strong. When woven into cloth, it is light-weight, soft, machine-washable, drapes well, and it is easy to handle and sew. As you can see, cotton has many advantages and disadvantages. That’s what you want when you have balls of fiber you’re wanting to tear apart and use in pieces, like in felting and stuffing small sewn objects. Short fibers are usually weaker and break. They are flat and slippery, which means they are easily woven, are light and cool: all good qualities for clothing. These microscopic photos show you how long and ribbony cotton fibers can be. If you are making felt or batting or stuffing cushions, short fibers are what you want, so they will bunch up and curl instead of laying flat and straight. The fiber should be strong and uniform if you want sturdy cloth. Good cotton fiber should be long (slightly over 1 inch).
